Welcome to the first entry of Virginia Workplace Law.

The national labor and employment law focus has greatly shifted, from “business friendly” to enhancing and enforcing employee protections and rights. It is now harder than ever for an employer to “stay in compliance.” The federal government has allocated an additional $15 million to the EEOC’s budget to assist enforcement, and the IRS has announced a focus on converting independent contractors to employees to increase payroll tax collection. That focus impacts your business on a daily basis.

While there are already many resources out there highlighting employment issues, the North Carolina and Virginia employment lawyers at Sands Anderson PC have decided to add our “voice.” Why? Because we think that our lawyers’ experiences in working with the business community in the mid-Atlantic area and beyond lends a different perspective. (Sands Anderson PC, is a 75-lawyer firm serving businesses in Virginia, North Carolina and beyond from its five office locations throughout Virginia and North Carolina.)

As we encounter comments and questions from the business community at large, and as we see “headlines” we think are important, we will endeavor to put them into context for your business.

So, as this blog develops, we hope you will comment in the space below including letting us know how we are doing. Thanks for visiting and welcome!

  • Hm, this web site does not have a working stylesheet when I look at it using my iphone 3GS. Maybe you can optimize the site for cellphone readers as well.
